Watch this Chiang Mai YouTube vlog first

This episode covers three days of food, shopping and fun in Chiang Mai: the rattan shops, grilled prawns, Mon Jam wooden carts and a new market. This guide adds a fourth-day waterfall excursion to help you plan a four-day, three-night independent trip.

Ready to fly to Chiang Mai after watching the video? Here is our four-day, three-night itinerary in one guide: spend Day 1 eating, taking photos and enjoying a spa in town; head to Mon Jam on Day 2; explore a market and try go-karting on Day 3; then finish with waterfalls and countryside scenery. Follow the route or choose your favourite stops to create your own trip.

Save it: four days at a glance

All times are local Thailand time, one hour behind Hong Kong. This schedule assumes you are staying around the Old Town or Nimman and are already in Chiang Mai on the morning of Day 1. Travel times are allowances and may vary with your hotel, weather, traffic and final stop locations.

DAY 01 · CITY & SLOW LIVING

🏨 Hotel guide ↗

Spend a day finding Chiang Mai’s rhythm

Take it easy in town on your first day. Start at Tha Phae Gate, stop for coffee in a creative neighbourhood, enjoy freshwater prawns for dinner, then begin your holiday with a relaxing massage.

09:30–10:15

Tha Phae Gate

Walk around the gate and take your first Chiang Mai holiday photo. Leave time to enjoy the Old Town atmosphere without rushing straight into a busy itinerary.

10:15–10:25

Travel to the rattan shops

Allow around 10 minutes for the short journey from Tha Phae Gate to the rattan shops. Adjust this to your starting point and traffic conditions.

10:25–12:00

Rattan shops · Explore Chang Moi Road

Several shops around Chang Moi Road sell rattan baskets, bags and woven goods, so visitors often call this stretch the “rattan street”. The map below marks หวายน้ำผึ้ง ช้างม่อย at 262 Chang Moi Road. Start here, browse the nearby shops, then leave for lunch at 12:00.

Nearby shops: HIDELAND SPACE, Run Ga Run Basic, Farmer Ranger, O.B.G and monday attrack.

12:00–13:15

Kaprao Nueanuea Chang Moi · Thai basil rice lunch

Enjoy Thai basil rice at Kaprao Nueanuea in Chang Moi. This slot includes the journey from the rattan shops and waiting time. Use the map below to find the Chang Moi branch.

13:15–16:45

Free time / Rest at your hotel

Take more street photos, browse small shops or rest at your hotel. If you arrive in the afternoon on Day 1, start here and move the earlier stops to Day 3.

17:00–18:30

Kung Yim Shop 2 · Freshwater prawn buffet dinner

Share a lively first-night meal with your travel companions. Reconfirm the branch address, opening hours, buffet price and available food before your visit.

20:00–21:30

Makkha Spa · Colonial Gardens

Allow time to rest and travel after dinner before visiting the colonial-style Colonial Gardens branch. Arrive 15 minutes early. This slot allows for a 90-minute treatment; follow your booking confirmation for the actual schedule.

Check treatments and our special prices through Juno & Me. Actual prices and available appointment times are subject to the product page and confirmation.

Day 1 in town | Let us arrange your private car

Day 1 runs from morning to an evening spa appointment; this does not mean a private car covers every time slot. Confirm the booked hours, dinner and spa transfers, overtime charges and quotation when booking.

DAY 02 · INTO THE MOUNTAINS

🏨 Hotel guide ↗

Head to Mon Jam and bring home the mountain views

Leave the city on Day 2 for Mon Jam. Garden cafés, wooden carts and open views make this a countryside day with food, fun and time to sit back.

08:00–09:00

Leave your hotel for Mae Rim

Allow about an hour to reach Fleur Cafe. Have a light breakfast at your hotel before leaving.

09:00–10:15

Fleur Cafe & Eatery · Brunch

Enjoy your meal, then take time to photograph the garden and café details. If the holiday queues are long, shorten your later café stop.

10:15–11:00

Drive up the mountain

Allow around 45 minutes for the mountain drive. If you are prone to travel sickness, plan time to rest before leaving.

11:00–12:00

Mon Jam wooden carts · Formula Hmong (ฟอมูล่าม้ง)

Try the wooden carts featured in the video on the Mon Jam mountain roads. The map marks Formula Hmong (ฟอมูล่าม้ง). Wooden carts and rail-based mountain coasters are different activities; riding restrictions and opening arrangements follow the operator’s rules.

12:00–13:00

Skywalk MonJam · Mountain-view café

Enjoy lunch or a snack with a view. Check the location on the Google Map below and adjust travel and visit times to the day’s conditions.

13:00–15:00

Travel to Mae Rim Elephant Home · Check-in and rest

After lunch, drive down to Mae Rim Elephant Home. This slot includes travel, rest and early check-in; it does not mean a two-hour drive. The itinerary uses the 15:00 session. Confirm departure and arrival times with the camp and driver.

15:00–17:00

Mae Rim Elephant Home · Two-hour elephant care experience

Change into the activity clothing and join the staff to learn about elephants, feed them, take part in herbal foot care, walk through the forest and bathe them in the river. Activities may change with the weather, river conditions and the elephants’ condition that day. The camp states that it offers no elephant riding or shows. Follow the staff’s instructions.

Tickets and private car hire are charged separately. Tickets do not include hotel transfers. Confirm availability for the 15:00 session first, and specify the camp and session when booking your car.

17:00–18:00

Change and return to town · Dinner at your leisure

Change after the activity and return to town, aiming to finish the ten-hour car booking by 18:00. If changing, meals or traffic extend the itinerary, confirm overtime charges first. You can also remove an earlier stop or adjust the activity session.

Let us arrange today’s transport

Mon Jam full-day private car: Small car for 2–3 people · 10 hours · From HK$850 per car. Attraction tickets, meals and the elephant session cost extra. Confirm any arrangements across service areas for the elephant camp first.

DAY 03 · WEEKEND FINDS

🏨 Hotel guide ↗

A morning market and afternoon go-karting

Keep Day 3 for weekend discoveries. Browse crafts, textiles and snacks at Bamboo Family Market, then change pace with go-karting at Chiangmai Circuit in the afternoon.

08:30–09:30

Breakfast and travel to the market

Allow around an hour for travel, depending on your hotel’s location.

09:30–12:00

Bamboo Family Market

Browse handmade goods and snacks, then take a break for a drink with your companions. Plan this day for Saturday or Sunday and check the organiser’s latest opening announcement before visiting.

12:00–13:00

Lunch

Eat at the market or choose a restaurant along the route after leaving.

13:00–14:00

Travel to Chiangmai Circuit

This is a travel allowance. Check the route to the correct track entrance before booking.

14:00–15:30

Go-kart experience

This slot includes check-in, the safety briefing, waiting and the activity; it is not 90 minutes of continuous driving. The circuit advises that motorcycles and go-karts use the track in alternating sessions. Confirm available karting times before you go.

From 15:30

Explore at your own pace

Return to town for coffee and souvenir shopping, or rest at your hotel.

Adjusting the itinerary: If Day 3 is not a weekend, swap the market day with another day. There is no need to miss the market just to follow the day numbers.

DAY 04 · WATERFALLS & TEMPLES

🏨 Hotel guide ↗

Finish your trip with waterfalls and temples

Start your final day with a bowl of khao soi, then head north of Chiang Mai. This section also previews the route in our next Chiang Mai vlog. Watch the next episode to see the trip in action!

What if this is your departure day? This full itinerary runs into the afternoon. If you fly that day, allow the time your airline requires for airport travel, vehicle return or transfers, and check-in. For afternoon or early-evening flights, consider a half-day city itinerary instead. Keep a generous airport buffer.

08:00–08:45

Khao Soi Mae Sai

Start your final day with northern Thai curry noodles. Tourism authority information lists Sunday as a closing day. If Day 4 is a Sunday, move this meal to another day.

08:45–10:15

Travel to the Sticky Waterfall

Allow around 1.5 hours for travel and entry.

10:15–11:30

Bua Tong Waterfall · The Sticky Waterfall

Bring a towel and a change of clothes. Keep to open areas and follow on-site instructions. Even at the “Sticky Waterfall”, mossy or flowing-water areas can be slippery. Do not attempt a climb just for a photo.

11:30–12:15

Change and travel to Wat Ban Den

Allow around 45 minutes for changing and travel. Confirm the actual route with your driver using the specified map.

12:15–13:00

Wat Ban Den · Chiang Mai’s blue temple complex

This stop is Wat Den Sali Sri Muang Kaen (Wat Ban Den) in the Mae Taeng area, not Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple in Chiang Rai. Wear suitable clothing that covers your shoulders and knees when visiting.

13:00–13:30

Travel to Dantewada Land of Angels

This travel allowance is based on the Mae Taeng route; confirm it with your driver.

13:30–15:00

Dantewada Land of Angels · Waterfall park

Have lunch, walk, take photos and rest at Dantewada Land of Angels Waterfall Park, with its landscaped gardens and man-made waterfalls. Check the location on the map below. Admission, dining and opening arrangements are subject to the park’s information.

15:00–16:30

Return to town

Allow around 1.5 hours for travel. If traffic is heavy or earlier stops take longer, head directly to your hotel or the airport.

16:30–17:00

Collect luggage at your hotel / Finish the car booking

Budget for up to ten hours of car hire from 08:00; you can finish earlier by reducing stops. Confirm the actual end time, airport transfer, overtime and additional stops separately.

Chiang Mai four-day, three-night itinerary FAQ

Do I need a private car every day?

For city days, you can walk or arrange short transfers depending on your hotel location. A private car is more suitable for Mon Jam, Mae Taeng and countryside waterfall routes. Car prices in this guide are per vehicle; tickets, meals and experiences cost extra.

What if Day 3 is not a Saturday or Sunday?

Swap the Bamboo Family Market day with another day, and plan around the organiser’s latest opening announcements.

Can I visit the waterfalls if I have a flight on Day 4?

Work backwards from your departure time to allow for airport travel and check-in. For afternoon or early-evening flights, choose a half-day city itinerary. The full countryside route returns to town in the afternoon, so it will not suit every departure day.

Before you go

  • Choose the weekday for your market visit first, then arrange the other days. Book popular restaurants, spas and experiences in advance.
  • For mountain or waterfall days, bring sunscreen, insect repellent, drinking water, a towel and a change of clothes.
  • Check age, height, health and participation restrictions for wooden carts, go-karts and elephant experiences with the operators.
  • This is a suggested schedule. Flights, hotels, meals and attraction tickets are not included. “From HK$850” refers to a full-day small-car booking, not the total cost of a four-day trip or a per-person price.
